Ivan Elbert Horton Jr.

Ivan Elbert Horton Jr. (IE), born on June 15, 1933, in his family home in Fairview, Virginia, peacefully went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2025, at the same cherished family home. Surrounded by the love of his family, he found eternal peace as his earthly suffering came to an end. A true steward of the land, IE’s passion for farming was evident throughout his life. He dedicated countless hours to raising cattle and tobacco on his beloved family farm, where he could often be found tinkering with various projects, riding his tractor along the roads, or enjoying moments on his porch swing, waving to passersby and admiring the valley he cherished. In addition to his farming endeavors, IE served as a devoted Scott County School Bus driver for many years, relishing the opportunity to connect with and bring joy to the children he transported. A proud graduate of Fairview High School, IE accepted Christ as his Savior at the tender age of 13. His unwavering faith in Jesus was the cornerstone of his life, inspiring him to become an avid Bible scholar, studying daily and teaching Sunday school. He was a dedicated member of Purchase Ridge Community Church, attending faithfully until illness prevented his participation. IE proudly fulfilled his duty to his country when drafted into the United States Army, serving as a medic during his deployment to Korea. In his later years, he took great pride in serving his community as a member of the Board of Supervisors for twelve years. His life journey was marked by love, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God. IE’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We encourage all to remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the remarkable way he lived and the lasting impact he made on those around him. Those fortunate enough to know IE will remember his engaging storytelling, infectious laughter, and deep-rooted faith in Jesus. He was unwavering in his commitment to spreading love, kindness, and knowledge of Christ to everyone he encountered. Although IE’s physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth his legacy of love and faith in all that we do. His light will forever shine brightly in our hearts. IE was preceded in death by his loving parents, Ivan Horton Sr. and Nora (Jennings) Horton; his brother, Elwood Horton; and sisters Maude, Vivian, Edna, Otis, Mildred, Carlene, and Edith. He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 and a half years, Polly Evelyn (Rhoton) Horton; his sister, Naomi (Horton) Harris; and his children, Christopher Horton, Philip Horton (Carolyn), Larry Horton, and Mitchell Horton (Tammy). He leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren: Heather Estes (Michael), Matthew Horton (Jessica), Sarah Leftwich (Luther), Joshua Horton (Katie), Jacob Horton, Hope Hensley (Matt), and Cody Horton (Hailee). His loving memory will also be carried on by his great-grandchildren, Zachery (Erin), Jordan, Alexzander, Aidan, Ian, Mattison, Ashton, Avery, Henleigh, Braxten, Kolten, Jase, Vivien, Sadie, Emmie, and Henry, along with many wonderful nieces, nephews, and special friends. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to his nurses, Rebecca Hall, Jody Hall, Christy Dockery, and the CARIS team for their unwavering support, kindness, and care. Family and friends are welcome to visit at any time at the family home, with a formal gathering taking place at Robinette Funeral Home in Blackwater, Virginia, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 1 PM at Purchase Ridge Community Church, officiated by Pastor Jackie Frazier and Brother Bill Tignor. Burial will follow at the Horton Family Cemetery in Fairview, Virginia. Pallbearers will include Matthew Horton, Joshua Horton, Jacob Horton, Cody Horton, Michael Estes, Luther Leftwich, and Matt Hensley.
