Sam B. Cecil Sr.
April 29, 1938 - May 23, 2019
Sam B. Cecil, Sr. was born in Pennington Gap, Virginia on April 29, 1938, and passed away on May 23, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Shelburne Cecil, and Charles Cecil. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Roop Cecil, one sister Parthena Cecil Croom of Newport News, Virginia, one daughter Samantha Cecil Poe (Donnie) of Roanoke, Virginia, one son Samuel Cecil, Jr. of Pennington Gap, Virginia, five grandchildren Micah Edgar, Caleb Poe, Jordan Poe, Clarke Cecil, Isabella Cecil, and his best friends Dave (Carol) Willis. He was a 1957 graduate of Pennington High School, a 1961 graduate of Milligan College, and a 1963 graduate of the College of William and Mary. Sam served his country in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was an army medic. Sam and Louise later taught school until moving back to Virginia in the late 1960’s. Sam had an infectious sense of humor, and always enjoyed sharing a good joke and making people laugh. He always tried to help people any way that he could. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap where he had served as a deacon and as a member of the church board. He was a charter board member of Farmers and Miners Bank, where he served on the bank board from 1979 until his death. He worked as Senior Vice President, loan officer and branch manager for the Rose Hill branch from 1982 until his retirement. He served on the Farmers and Miners Board of Directors for 40 years. A funeral service will be held at First Christian Church in Pennington Gap at 3:00pm on Sunday May 26th, 2019. No formal visitation will be held. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap.
